How Much Should You Charge for Your Sewing Work in London?

If you are sewing for friends, neighbours, or small clients in London and you still don’t know how much to charge, I want you to pause for a moment.

You are not “just sewing.”You are offering a service. And your time has value.

One of the biggest mistakes I see, especially in our Latina community here in the UK, is undercharging because we feel grateful for the opportunity. But gratitude does not pay rent in London.

Step 1: Calculate Your Time

Ask yourself:How long does this job actually take me?

If shortening trousers takes you 30 minutes, that is skilled labour. In London, hourly service rates are higher than in many Latin American countries. You must adapt to the market you are in.

Step 2: Add Your Costs

Include:

  • Thread

  • Needles

  • Electricity

  • Machine maintenance

  • Rent (even if you work from home)

Your price is not just your hands. It is your structure.

Step 3: Research the London Market

Check what local alteration shops charge. In many areas of London, trouser shortening ranges between £12–£20 depending on location.

If you charge £5, you are not being humble. You are undervaluing your skill.

Step 4: Pay Yourself Properly

You are building a sewing business, not a hobby.

If you want to grow, invest, and maybe one day sell patterns or scale your services, you must start thinking like a business owner.

You are capable. You are skilled. And London is a city that pays for quality.

As a Colombian pattern maker building community here, I want you to succeed with confidence — without losing your warmth, your culture, or your essence.

Because sewing is not just stitching. It is income.
