How to Sew a Zipper Without Puckering | Step by Step

If you are sewing in London and your zipper always looks wavy or uneven, you are not alone.

Many beginners think the problem is the machine. Most of the time, it’s technique.

When a zipper puckers, it usually happens because:

• The fabric wasn’t stabilised• The zipper wasn’t aligned correctly• The tension was not adjusted• You pulled the fabric while sewing

Step 1: Prepare the FabricAlways press your seam first. If you are working with lightweight or stretchy fabric, use interfacing to stabilise the zipper area.

Step 2: Align CarefullyPin or clip the zipper evenly before sewing. Do not rush this part.

Step 3: Use the Right FootA zipper foot gives you better control and keeps your stitch line straight.

Step 4: Do Not Pull the FabricLet the machine feed the fabric naturally. Pulling causes puckering.

If you live in London and want to improve your sewing to maybe offer alterations or build a small sewing business, clean zipper installation makes a huge difference in how professional your work looks.

As a Latina Colombian pattern maker growing here in the UK, I want you to feel confident using your machine — not frustrated by it.
